This exit interview includes many of the questions that I use to interview homebuyers before I have them on my podcast, called The Pursuit of Home with Scott Harris. We speak with real people buying real estate. People just like you!

Getting Off The Couch

• When did you realize that it was time to move? What was the driving force?
• How long did it take between when you knew you were ready for a new home, and when you actually started your search? What excuses did you make before you did?
• What finally inspired you to get off the couch or computer and into actual homes?

Starting The House Hunt

• What’s your Home Buyer Personality? What about your significant other? How did knowing your tendencies help you in your search? How did it help you hire an agent?
• How did you start? Did you hire an agent right away? Or did you look on your own at first? And if you worked with someone, how did you find them? Did you interview multiple people? What was the deciding factor in choosing that one agent in the end?
• Was this your first purchase? If not, what helpful things did you bring from prior experience(s)? On the other hand, what wasn’t helpful at all?
• Who led the buying process? You? Your significant other? Your Agent?
• What did preparation look like before you started seeing houses? How clear was your vision of your new home? Did you create a checklist first, like we offered in the Home Buyer Intake Questionnaire? Or did you just dive right in?

In The Trenches

• How much time did your agent spend as your coach? How much as your real estate advisor? What did you need more, their real estate wisdom, or their understanding of you and your needs?
• Did you ever fire an agent and hire someone new? Did you fire more than one agent? What was the issue? Was it the same issue over and over?
• What did your agent do well during the property search? What about negotiations? What didn’t you like about your agent during the property search?
• What was the worst property you saw in your search? Where did you disagree with your partner on properties? How long did it take to start agreeing, or at least coming to a compromise? Did you lose out on a property that felt like “the one that got away”? Did that happen multiple times? How much time did you spend in Opposite Mode?
• What else went wrong in your purchase process? Who were your House Guests that paid a visit during the search? Where did they steer you wrong? Are you able to laugh about it now?

When You Found The One

• How long did it take to find your home? And who found it—you, or your agent?
• Were you surprised about the home you decided to buy? How much free will did you think you had in your decision? To the point, how much did thinking factor into your decision process? Or was it more intuition?
• What “miracles” took place during your search? Did you use Home Delivery to let your home come to you?
• How important was the price of the home you ultimately bought? Did you spend more than you expected? By how much?
• Did you second guess your choice once you found it?
• Who created more problems in the transaction, you/your significant other, the seller, or the agents involved? Did you have any “dark nights of the soul” when your worst fears came true?

After The Closing

• What were the greatest things to overcome in this transition?
• What did you learn about yourself in the buying process?
• Was there anything that you gave up on that you regret? Any other regrets with your purchase?
• What could your agent have done to make the experience better? What would you do differently next time?
• What one lesson would you share with first-time homebuyers to help them?
